Taking a walk through history... for only $2 fee per person, you can walk a "castle"! So cool. Enjoyed seeing the living quarters, learning about the owners and the caretakers that lived there, and imagining the space with furnishings in it. Small shop at the front if you want a little take-away. Overall, a great stop while sightseeing and visiting Myrtle Beach. BTW: the artist who lived here has many sculptures displayed at Brookgreen Gardens (just about right across the street) - also WELL WORTH the visit!
Definitely worth a visit. It does cost, $2 per person. You tour at your own pace. The castle has an interesting story. However, the castle is showing it's age and does need to be restored. When we were there they were replacing the windows but more needs to be done.
ββββββ A Hidden Historical Gem on the Coast! If you need a break from the standard beach attractions, Atalaya Castle is an absolute must-visit. Tucked away inside Huntington Beach State Park, this 1930s Moorish-style winter home of Archer and Anna Hyatt Huntington is fascinating. For a small admission fee (around $2 plus park entry), you can do a self-guided walking tour through the massive, open-air brick courtyard, old living quarters, and the iconic central watchtower. The architecture, intricate ironwork, and framing palm trees make it a photographer's dream. Itβs rich with history, incredibly peaceful, and right next to the ocean. You can easily spend an hour or two wandering the grounds. Highly recommend adding this to your vacation itinerary! Pictures added are from seperate devices. Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra and a Nikon D3400 camera.
It is quite an interesting Park, I'm not entirely sure why they call this a castle? A famous sculptor built this home for the winter because she had tuberculosis and lived in New York the majority of the time. It's my understanding that she and her husband did a lot for the area in South Carolina.
$8 to enter the park then $2 to enter the castle per adult. Very favorable price for a day pass to a beach side view, an estate that you can enter, a marsh with trails, and convince stores. The park staff was super friendly and gave us a book for state parks, and the area was car and pedestrian friendly. Would easily recommend to visit for at least a few hours if not the whole day.
