Salisbury House & Gardens

We visited Salisbury House in Des Moines in August 2025 and did the guided tour, which made the experience unforgettable. Our guide was knowledgeable and shared interesting stories and insights that would have been missed if we did the self-guided tour. The home is absolutely beautiful. Definitely worth visiting if you're in the area!

I recently took a tour of Salisbury House & Gardens in Des Moines, and it is a breathtaking 5/5 star experience that truly transports you back in time. Modeled after King John’s House in Salisbury, England, this 1920s stone mansion is an absolute masterpiece of historic preservation. Walking through the massive rooms, you are surrounded by an incredible collection of authentic rare books, stunning international artwork, and intricate Gothic and Renaissance architecture. The self-guided tour lets you explore at your own pace, and the sheer detail of the historic furnishings and woodwork makes it feel like you've stepped directly into an English estate. The surrounding botanical gardens are just as spectacular as the mansion itself. The manicured lawns, vibrant flower beds, and tranquil woodland paths are meticulously maintained, offering a peaceful escape right in the middle of the city. The staff and volunteers are incredibly welcoming and full of fascinating knowledge about the original owners, the Weeks family, which adds so much context to everything you see. Whether you are an architecture enthusiast, a history buff, or just looking for a beautiful and unique place to spend an afternoon, this local treasure is an absolute must-visit.

Very cool place. We spent about 45 minutes, a short self tour of the house because we were in a rush. It was raining so we couldn't walk the gardens. I recommend this tour.

Salisbury House made for a lovely afternoon visit! The docents are knowledgeable and the home is certainly a hidden gem here in Des Moines. The architecture alone is worth the visit but also learning the story of the family that once called the property home is well worth it. Definitely recommend and an easy visit - recommend about 1.5 hours to read and do everything on an initial visit.

Incredible 1923 Gothic/Tudor styled mansion with features imported from England, including the White Cliffs of Dover, 1600s German statuary, English wood beams, stone fireplace, and stones from Greece. The 28,000 foot mansion is home to art and historical pieces such as: suit of armor, tapestries, European paintings, religious art, sculptures, a Buddha statue, Native American art, original furniture, a vase from Cyprus dating to 1000 BCE. Gorgeous gardens. Interesting history on the Weeks family wealth and the Armand cosmetic business that they started. Impressive art collection that symbolizes Edith Weeks’ vast knowledge of history and art. Beautiful old growth woods, outdoor spaces for music festivals. Knowledgeable docents that can answer all of your questions. It was definitely worth the trip and we spent 2 hours touring the mansion and the grounds.
