I’ve visited a museum in almost every city I’ve ever traveled to. I count the DIA among the top tier of art and archaeological museums, featuring a diverse collection of art and artifacts from all over the world. Among the treasures are paintings, murals, hieroglyphics, a mummy and sculptures I photographed during my visit. The African American paintings were especially colorful and some very modern and novel, for example the painting with triangular shape and the Freeform canvas that was playfully scrunched and shaped by hand instead of stretched onto a frame. Some other highlights are the Diego Riveira murals, the Egyptian mummy, sarcophagi and hieroglyphs, and the Jewish artifacts and paintings of Sampson and Delilah in the galleries. I also watched a fascinating video in the preparation of papyrus and reed pens for calligraphy. We walked up to the second floor and gradually wound our way back to the first floor. There are so many topics and epochs of exhibits that I recommend asking for help locating a particular exhibit if you don’t encounter it. The marble floors, stairs and hallways give this museum a classic and elegant ambiance. The art is curated smartly to be accessible and thoughtfully explained. There is something to see here for any taste or interest! A must see museum for Michiganders and visitors to Detroit.
Free to enter if you live in Macomb, Wayne, and Oakland Counties. Wear comfortable shoes because there is a lot to see and a lot of walking on several floors. Some exhibits are closed for changing out featured arts. Overall, it was fun and interesting. ****
Greatest art collection you can't miss. Loved all collections, Rivera's court frescoes, native american, European and modern art. Great staff will help you and recommend areas. Try the guided tour, which we took, only explaining about 1 piece of each room, but you get the general view to come back again on you own...
The Detroit Institute of Arts is one of those rare museums that manages to feel both world-class and deeply personal at the same time. Its collection is impressively diverse, spanning centuries and cultures, yet the layout makes it easy to explore without feeling overwhelmed. One of the most memorable highlights is the stunning Detroit Industry Murals by Diego Rivera, which alone are worth the visit. They capture the spirit of the city with powerful imagery and remarkable detail, offering an experience that feels immersive and uniquely tied to Detroit’s identity. Beyond that, the museum features an exceptional range of works—from European masters to contemporary pieces—each thoughtfully displayed. Whether you’re an art expert or just casually exploring, there’s something here that resonates. The atmosphere inside the museum is calm and welcoming, making it easy to take your time and truly engage with the art. Staff members are helpful without being intrusive, and the overall experience feels accessible rather than intimidating. Overall, the Detroit Institute of Arts stands as a cultural cornerstone of the city. It offers a rich, rewarding visit that combines artistic excellence with a strong sense of place, making it a must-see for anyone spending time in Detroit.
As a wedding photographer, the Detroit Institute of Arts is easily one of my favorite locations in Michigan for bridal portraits. The architecture is timeless, elegant, and incredibly versatile — from the marble exterior and grand arches to the clean lines and soft natural light around the building. What I love most about shooting here is how cinematic everything feels. Even simple moments between the couple look elevated and artistic. The location works beautifully for both classic luxury-style wedding photos and modern editorial portraits. Another huge plus is the variety within walking distance. In a short session, you can capture elegant architectural shots, softer garden-style portraits, and iconic Detroit city scenery all in one place. For couples considering wedding photos here: mornings and weekdays tend to be the best for cleaner backgrounds and easier parking. The staff and atmosphere around the DIA area have always been pleasant during our shoots. Detroit honestly has some hidden gems for photography, and the DIA is absolutely one of them. — Avida Productions Photogra
