(2026/07/24) A nice capitol building that blends historic charm with modern touches. I heard the interior is even more impressive, but even just viewing it from the outside, it is a fine piece of architecture on its own.
I thought it was a nice capitol. They have a parking garage with visitor parking. The outside of the building is not the most glamorous, but inside is very nice. They have exhibits inside also about the history of the capital. There's also a nice gift shop. The grounds are also nice and have some cool monuments.
The Ohio Statehouse is designed in the Greek Revival style, but with a uniquely conservative twist. Unlike the soaring, ornate domes of many other state capitols, Ohio opted for a two-story cupola with a low conical roof. It gives the building a broad, horizontal massing that feels grounded and permanent rather than aspirational. Built between 1839 and 1861, it’s constructed almost entirely of Columbus Limestone (quarried just down the road from the Scioto River), which gives it that monochromatic, "carved from the earth" aesthetic. The Architectural Vibe: I actually found it very toned down compared to other capitols. In a way, Columbus City Hall (a later Neoclassical build) feels more "monumental" in its verticality. The Statehouse feels more like a democratic fortress—austere, symmetrical, and devoid of the "Gothic" flourishes that were popular in Europe at the time. It’s an honest building, but it lacks the visual "shout" you expect from a state’s central seat of power. Photographer’s Note: I missed the window on the perfect light for this one, whoops. If you’re shooting the West Plaza (the High Street side), you have to watch out for the Huntington Center and the other skyscrapers directly to the west. They cast massive shadows across the limestone facade starting in the late afternoon, so aim for mid-morning or high noon if you want to capture the texture of the Doric columns without the skyline interference. The "What Else": Even if you don’t go inside (I didn't), the grounds (Capitol Square) are a museum in their own right. The McKinley Monument on the west side is a heavy-hitter, and the history of this place is deep, Abraham Lincoln’s body actually lay in state in the rotunda here during its inaugural years.
This gem of Ohio is a wonderful historic building. Very well cared for. Beautiful furnishings, art, and decorating. Wayfinding g definitely needs improvement throughout. Depending on a paper map (if you know where to obtain one) should be a backup plan, not primary. Having historically correct signage for North & South Galleries, Atrium, which upper area is for Senate or House, marking garage exit etc should be done immediately. Complete campus maps should be on each floor in a prominent place. More electronics displays for committee meetings and sessions should be made available.
The Ohio Statehouse is a real treasure and a must see. Beautiful example of Greek revival architecture that was lovingly restored years ago and is very well maintained. I’ve been in there literally hundreds of times and always see something I’ve never noticed. Wonderful historical building that offers tours: be sure to call ahead. Be sure to see the Rotunda, the House & Senate Chambers, and the museum and gift shop.
