The Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory Gardens

Five stars for the Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory. I had such a wonderful time visiting the Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory and it definitely deserves five stars. The different exhibits they have are fantastic and so full of vibrant life. Seeing a banana tree with bananas growing on it was absolutely amazing. I also saw an Arabica coffee tree and a mango tree which were highlights for me. Even though I am not a flower guy the rare orchids really impressed me. The way these flowers grow out of the leaves is truly spectacular and unique. There are so many different kinds of plants flowers and foliage everywhere you look making it a beautiful experience. As a 22 year old Metro Detroit resident who is getting into nature this place was perfect and really inspiring. I highly recommend checking it out.

Years ago, I married my best friend, and we took our very first wedding photos here — so walking back across the bridge to Belle Isle felt deeply nostalgic. The outside gardens are simple, yet absolutely beautiful to walk through. There’s a small river flowing beside the conservatory, and the whole place feels like a little pocket of green magic hidden inside the city. Once you step inside the Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory, you immediately feel a sense of joy and calm as the plants shine in all their beauty. Each plant is labeled with its name and place of origin, and wandering from room to room feels like exploring a peaceful garden oasis. Today, professional wedding photography now requires pre-booking and payment, but the beauty of the place still feels timeless. Across from the conservatory is a huge picnic area with comfortable chairs and massive trees, perfect for relaxing and slowing down. Right nearby you’ll also find the aquarium and the giant slide, which makes Belle Isle feel like a complete little escape from busy life. A beautiful place to unwind, reconnect with nature, and simply breathe.

I’m not sure why I find conservatories so beautiful but I could spend days and days exploring them and never be tired of them. Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory, located on Belle Isle in Detroit, Michigan is located in the middle of one of the most beautiful hidden gems of Michigan. Belle Isle is an island in the Detroit River and offers a variety of areas and activities for families to enjoy and explore. We also did the aquarium, and that post is next! Cost- zero dollars (however Michigan Parks does do a Recreation Passport which can be obtained easily for entry to all state parks and campgrounds) Overall impression: would love to return in the spring and see the island in color!! Definitely family friendly and could spend an entire day with everything Belle Isle has to over!!

Seems like a world away from downtown Detroit. Tropical and humid inside. Free to visit. The ground are beautifully manicured too, lots of folks taking wedding pictures or actually doing their weddings onsite. Dogs not allowed inside but they're okay outside.

The Belle Isle Conservatory is easily one of the most unique and peaceful spots in Detroit. Walking in feels like stepping into another world—lush greenery, warm humid air, and beautifully maintained plant collections spread across several distinct rooms. The architecture alone is worth the visit, with the glass dome creating incredible light that makes everything feel vibrant and alive. Each section has its own vibe—from tropical plants to desert cacti—and it’s easy to spend a good amount of time just wandering and taking it all in. It’s especially great for photography or just a quiet escape from the city. Best of all, it’s free (with park entry), which makes it an absolute must-visit whether you’re local or just passing through. A true Detroit gem.
