The Contemporary Austin - The Jones Center

Always a beautiful space — I like the various events that members and non-members can attend. Most recently, the evening kicking off the weekend “Friends Fair Austin” was awesome! Rooftop party with Bruce and DJ just made the weekend arrive so much faster. Thank you Getting to see Sable Elyse-Smith’s exhibit before the rooftop fun was perfect. Looking forward to future events and inviting friends to join and see your beautiful downtown museum. ☮️☮️☮️

I noticed that the museum is pretty small since it took less than an half hour to see all of the paintings which does not justify the $10 admission ($5 with student discount). On the bright side, there's a rooftop to see parts of downtown Austin from higher up and it appeared that it can host events. I believe you can get a better deal if you also visit the other location at Laguna Gloria within 7 days of the visit with proof of receipt so make sure you save that receipt.

Two floors with three exhibition areas and a rooftop area with seating to reflect. No dedicated parking lot but there is paid street parking. The exhibition layout was pretty basic but clean and organized. Staff was very friendly and engaging. The current Teddy Sandoval exhibit was extensive amd provocative. It was surprising to see that he dabbled in other mediums. I enjoyed the open area on the second floor, allowing each artist work to shine in its own space. You may take the elevator or stairs up to the third floor for some fresh air. It's a decent view with tables and a smaller over look area. Very tiny gift shop area. Free admission for NARM members.

This museum is just the right size for a one day 1-2 hour visit. You can see everything but not feel like your brain is at max capacity. Very knowledgeable and friendly docents. I learned that museum changes the collection regularly, so will definitely put it in my notes for repeat visits.

One of two locations (Laguna Gloria on West 35th Street is the other), The Contemporary Austin — Jones Center offers a stunning exterior mural (“Man Who Fell to Earth” by Manik Raj Nakra) but not much inside. Though it spans two floors, it’s a small museum with little content. The few exhibits included lacked breadth: one consisted of variations of the same work. While the $10 admission does cover both locations, it definitely isn’t worth it for Jones Center alone.
