The Surety Hotel

Have come for years and won’t anymore. We have stayed at the Surety Hotel several times over the past few years as our annual stop on the drive to visit family in Illinois, so this review is especially disappointing to write. For nearly $600 for one night, I expected a much better experience. Instead, we found a trash wrapper in the bed when we pulled back the sheets, which immediately made us question the cleanliness of the room. The room also had an overwhelming bleach smell that was anything but welcoming. As repeat guests, it would have been nice to receive some type of room upgrade or acknowledgment of our loyalty, but there was none. We booked the pet package and had to call the front desk because several of the advertised items were missing. We never received the dog toy or the list of nearby dog-friendly restaurants and recommendations that was supposed to be included. The room itself felt tired and in need of maintenance, with cracked tile, poor grout work, and it was noticeably smaller than expected for the price. I've genuinely enjoyed staying here in the past, which makes this visit even more disappointing. Unfortunately, after this experience, we'll be making the Kimpton Cottonwood in Omaha our regular stop on this drive instead. I hope the Surety Hotel gets back to the level of service and attention to detail that originally made us choose it year after year.

I both work with and have experienced the events the hotel has hosted as a vendor and guest. Aside from being a gorgeous, swanky, well located space, their staff is amazing! The restaurant is delicious and upscale. I am most impressed by the recent events the hotel puts on. Kristen Norvet, their new lifestyle director is bringing more events that are relevant for various ages and draw people in. They have live music, mom’s day photo shoot, they had a week of Valentines happening with kids activities and more. Lots of diversity and intention. I’ve attended a live music event on the patio last year but remained unfamiliar with the hotel. The latest events were more publicized and lead me to invite friends and also enjoy the restaurant. Kudos to Lris and the Surety team for creating more experiences the community can enjoy. I’m always looking for safe spaces that’s family friendly and /or grown and sexy for my family or my friends to meet up. They have been giving both and we’re here for it!

Stayed here during a long weekend trip to Des Moines. We had a corner room that faced the courthouse and had a beautiful view every morning. The room was spacious, clean, and very comfortable. There were times during the trip that we didn't want to leave the room and elected to relax over the afternoon. The restaurant had incredible food and the peanut butter pie for desert was the perfect way to end the meal. There was also a coffee bar in the lobby. The service was excellent and the pastries for breakfast were fresh and paired well with the latte. Definitely planning to come back when it's warmer!

I had a very disappointing experience at this hotel and would strongly advise others to think twice before booking. From the moment I checked in, things went downhill. The room I was initially given was in unacceptable condition — it was clearly not cleaned properly, and the pillows had an unpleasant smell. The overall hygiene was far below what you would expect, especially considering the price being charged. I immediately contacted the front desk for assistance. The staff member told me he would come upstairs with a new key. I waited in my room for about 20 minutes, but no one showed up. Eventually, I had to go back downstairs myself to resolve the issue. What made the situation worse was the complete lack of professionalism — there was no apology for the delay, no acknowledgment of the inconvenience, and no effort to make things right. It felt dismissive and unprofessional. For the price of this hotel, the quality of the room and service is simply unacceptable. Cleanliness and basic customer service should be the bare minimum, and unfortunately, this place failed on both counts. I would not recommend staying here. There are far better options available for the same price range. Please stay away if you value cleanliness and respectful service.

What a joke! Stopped for dinner at the Mulberry street Tavern and wow! The server took our order and not 5 minutes later brought us the wrong order, mind you the same server that took our order. He genuinely thought he had the right table. Managed to confuse us with the other 3 tables in the restaurant… Ordered my steak rare and when it came out well done I asked to speak with the manager. The chef de cuisine showed up. Can’t imagine why the kitchen is out of order when the chef is busy attending to customers instead of running the kitchen. Overpriced, unorganized and completely not worth our stop! Avoid at all costs.
